With water loss occurrences, you don’t get the opportunity to plan the timing of a remodel. You can, however, make the most of the occasion and make some of the upgrades you have been looking forward to. Kitchen cabinet refacing and new custom cabinets can be used to create the space that fits your needs by updating the cabinets that don’t need to be replaced, and adding new cabinets where it suits you.
For this client, we created a new custom kitchen island with dark gray supermatte thermofoil, topping it with a butcherblock countertop finished in a beautiful white-tinted Odie’s Oil. The white tint keeps the wood natural looking, avoiding the yellow amber colors that come out when using mineral oil or butcherblock oil. Odie’s Oil is 100% food safe, solvent free, and non-toxic, making it the perfect choice for butcher blocks, cutting boards, and many other woodworking, cabinetry, flooring, and furniture projects.
Before the kitchen cabinet refacing, we made some nice modifications to the existing cabinets. We built one new cabinet over the fridge; a deeper cabinet, giving a cleaner look and providing a little extra space for infrequently used items.
We removed the cabinet over the hood and raised it up and bumped it out, creating a staggered look for a better focal point. We also created a three-drawer bank left of the cooktop for easy-access space, and replaced the waste roll-out with a new Rev-A-Shelf system.
After refacing the kitchen in high-quality thermofoil laminate, we installed new moldings, new dovetailed drawers with Blum Tandem glides, and new thermofoil doors with Blum soft-close hinges.
The thermofoil material is a perfect choice for a busy household: it is durable, easy to clean, and looks great. Thermofoil is not porous, so it is difficult to stain, unlike painted wood. It is also much more difficult to chip or scratch thermofoil than painted wood cabinets, and it can be cleaned with standard household cleaners such as 409.
